Applied Debating: Developing Position Papers
In the process of developing this position paper, I have strengthened my understanding of applied debate as a structured process of examining a real-world issue, considering competing perspectives, evaluating evidence, and developing a reasoned position rather than relying on personal opinion.
I have developed the ability to identify and define an issue, construct a clear thesis, present opposing views fairly, critically evaluate their limitations, and support my arguments with relevant scholarly evidence. I can also use a position paper to communicate a persuasive and balanced argument and develop practical recommendations. These skills strengthen my professional capacity to participate in evidence-informed debate about complex social issues.
